George diving in Sardinia    George with Umberto Pelizzari

George Stoyle

I started freediving early 2004 after meeting Alun in the jacuzzi (!) Not long after, I found myself at Dorothea one morning in the wind and rain with a load of borrowed equipment - the water was cold and murky and despite only managing to get to 12m on my first attempt I was hooked. I dived regularly at Dorothea for about a year and a half, during which time I went to Sardinia and did Umberto's course, and also nipped over to Sweden for a spot of ice diving (full report here and here). Since then I've been working in Seychelles, New Zealand and Honduras - still freediving, mainly to take photos (my half finished website), although not enjoying the same company and relaxed environment :(

I've also been SCUBA diving for 10yrs and, despite having dived all over the world, am an outspoken supporter of diving in UK waters. I also love spearing whenever I get the chance, which doesn't seem to be much. I'm currently working in Honduras for the Utila Centre for Marine Ecology looking at reef fish interactions which gives me plenty of opportunity to practise SCUBA and freediving, although I have to admit I miss the cold, dark UK waters and the old Dorothea gang.
